Your husband could be me....You could be my mother. Your husband could be me. My mother is 89. She's spirited, strong willed, lightly demented and has a tidy list of chronic ailments common to the elderly. I remember when, as these ailments were being discovered, she was always in crisis/non-crisis mode and I was always supportive but mystified. She's finally in maintenance mode. Your chronic issues are much more challenging than hers, but your post rings a very loud bell for me. I'm sure my mother could have written this.
